The Austin Waldorf School, a co-educational, k-12 day school located in Austin, Texas, seeks a full-time high school Math and Science teacher to begin July 1, 2022.

The Austin Waldorf School is seeking a highly qualified individual who can bring our high school students to a deep level of understanding in the areas of science and math, and simultaneously prepare them well for the possibility of studying the subject further in college. The successful applicant will teach a world-class Waldorf HS science curriculum, including chemistry, environmental sciences, and physics, in both laboratory/concept development and problem-solving courses, and integrate the curriculum with the rest of our HS program. The successful applicant will also teach mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus or a combination of the subjects, and would be responsible for laboratory safety, organization, and cleanliness, as well as requesting any needed maintenance, and stocking/storage of supplies and equipment.

Strong candidates will have a tremendous enthusiasm for their subject and a commitment to the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Additional Responsibilities:

- Teach main lesson blocks in grades 9-12
- Teach regularly scheduled skills classes
- Contribute to weekly science department meetings
- Attend weekly high school faculty, and full-faculty, meetings as scheduled
- Serve as a student and class advisor
- Collaborate with student support to ensure that all students are learning at their highest potential

Qualifications:

- A college degree in a scientific discipline including at least undergraduate-level coursework and laboratory experience in chemistry
- Successfully completed coursework in mathematics at the college level
- Knowledge of one or more scientific fields in addition to chemistry (physics, environmental science, thermodynamics or geology) sufficient to teach the subject at the high school level

Secondary qualifications:

- Advanced degree in a field related to high school science
- High School Waldorf Teacher Training Certification or familiarity with the work of its founder Rudolf Steiner
- Successful high-school teaching experience (preferably in a Waldorf school)
- Knowledge of natural world chemistry
- Experience with applications of chemistry for high school students (such as pharmaceuticals, food, or consumer products
- Completion of Waldorf teacher training or the willingness to complete the training after beginning work

Applicants should have (as corroborated by professional references):

- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- The ability to manage a classroom for emotional and physical safety
- The ability to manage a laboratory for emotional and physical safety
- The ability both to work collaboratively with colleagues and to work independently, and
- A professional demeanor

As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to

- Demonstrate through sample teaching in the classroom the ability to engage high-school students in interesting chemistry, environmental science and physics lessons, involving both drawing concepts out of laboratory demonstrations and mathematical problem-solving
- Demonstrate a competent mathematics lesson in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, or calculus
