About Raphael Academy
Raphael Academy educates students who may have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, or other intellectual disabilities in mixed-age classrooms grades 1st through 12th. Located in the historic Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans, Raphael Academy is part of Raphael Village which is founded on principles that integrate education, community life, life-sharing, and the arts to meet the needs of youth with developmental disabilities. Position Description
We are seeking a candidate for the 2022-23 school year with a Bachelor's degree or higher, with a teaching certificate (from Louisiana or another state), and experience working with special needs students to fill the position of Transition class teacher and Lead Faculty Member. The Transition Class (high school) teacher is responsible for teaching an adapted Waldorf curriculum for students with exceptionalities in a combined 9th-12th grade classroom.
A minimum of 5 years experience as a special needs lead classroom teacher is preferred in addition to good leadership and organizational skills. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a master’s degree in special needs Waldorf education or who have experience teaching in a Camphill setting or who have graduated from the Camphill Academy. In addition to the Lead Faculty duties, the candidate will serve as the lead teacher of the Transition classroom (up to 7 students with an assistant).
Qualifications
Master's degree in special education (preferred)
At least five years of teaching experience (strongly preferred)
Camphill Academy training (preferred)
Demonstrated success in raising the achievement levels of special needs students
State teaching credentials or equivalent (required)
Belief in the mission and values of Raphael Academy

Class Teacher Responsibilities
Teach students using Waldorf and Curative education methods
Commitment to the ongoing study of the Waldorf curriculum to inform daily main lessons so they are an original expression of the content and are tailored to the students in your class
Provide individual or small group instruction with the assistance of the class assistant during daily Ability Group Instruction in Math and Reading
Develop IEPs to promote students’ academic, physical, and social development
Create and foster a positive learning environment and exhibit positive rapport with students
Candidates must have good parent relationship building skills, the ability to work collaboratively with other faculty members, and be a good spokesperson while representing the Academy in the greater community. Candidates must to be authorized to work in the U.S., must pass a background check and child abuse clearance.
Compensation
