Special Needs Middle Grades Classroom - (5th-8th)
Mar 11 2022 | Raphael Academy | New Orleans, LA
Raphael Academy is a Waldorf-inspired school serving students in grades 1-12 who may have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, or other developmental disabilities. Raphael Academy is part of Raphael Village, a non-profit supporting differently-abled people in becoming fully engaged in life and community.
We are seeking a candidate for the 2022-23 school year with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, with a teaching certificate (from Louisiana or another state), and experience working with special needs students to fill the position of Middle Grades class teacher. The Middle Grades Class teacher is responsible for teaching an adapted Waldorf curriculum for students with exceptionalities in a combined 5th-8th grade classroom at Raphael Academy.
General Responsibilities Include:
To teach from the Waldorf curriculum and Curative Education philosophy, and follow the Raphael Academy Faculty and Staff Pedagogical Policy and Procedure Handbook.
To research, develop, and teach Main Lesson blocks in keeping with the Waldorf Curriculum in addition to watercolor painting, form drawing, and curative exercises with the aid of resources that provide the teacher with overarching lesson goals and context (expanding on topics covered in lower grades).
Resources include: The Tasks and Content of the Steiner Waldorf Curriculum, Charles Kovac books, Live-Education, and www.waldorfteacherresources.com.
To assess each student at the beginning and end of each school year utilizing the Brigance Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills II.
To teach daily Ability Group reading and math lessons by using Raphael Academy’s supplementary curricula such as the PCI, Fountas & Pinell and math resources.
To update, maintain, or create new individual student IEPs throughout the school year with support and guidance from the Faculty Chair.
To willingly participate in Raphael Academy’s Mentoring Program, designed to support you in your work as a Waldorf Curative educator. Mentorship will be from our Faculty Chair and/or through our mentoring relationship with Camphill School.
To attend the weekly Study Group meeting that will meet on a day other than the regular faculty meeting. This meeting is dedicated to reading and discussing Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy of Waldorf Education, child development, festival life, and/or Curative Education. Raphael Village is an Affiliate member of the Camphill Association of North America; material meant to deepen our awareness of Anthroposophy and the core principles and values of Camphill communities will be provided.
To work alongside other faculty members throughout the year to plan and attend school events such as school festivals, community events to promote the school, open houses, fundraisers, etc.
From time to time, all faculty will participate in the hiring process for open positions such as classroom teachers, specialty teachers, and paraprofessionals. Faculty will help review resumes and select candidates to be interviewed.
To attend any Employer-provided training (professional development) that may occur throughout the school year or summer. Professional development is paid for by Raphael Academy and may occur on a weekend from time to time.
Depending on experience, the applicant may be asked to attend a virtual curriculum training (paid by the school) on June 26th – July 1st.
