Early Childhood Program Assistant

Terms: Part time, 3 days/week, Tues, Wed, Thurs, 8:00-3:30
Compensation: $15 Hourly
Reports to: Lead Teacher
Meetings: Orientation meeting in August, monthly meetings with early childhood faculty, weekly check-ins with the lead teacher
SUMMARY: The Early Childhood Program Assistant assists in either the Seacoast Waldorf School kindergarten or nursery program. The Assistant Teacher’s primary responsibility is to help and support the Lead Teacher in his/her work with the children. Duties include: snack preparation, assisting with set-up and clean-up, festival preparation, and meeting with early childhood teachers once a week. The daily activities include an artistic activity, creative play, circle time, a wholesome snack, outside playtime and story. The Early Childhood Program Assistant must be available beginning in late August during work week for preparation of the classroom and orientation until the last day of school (early June) and must be available to work during the entire school calendar. Assistant work time will be determined based on early childhood program operating hours.
Responsibilities: The following responsibilities are typical of those performed by associates in this job title; however, associates may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each associate in this job title.
• Preparing daily snack
• Providing afternoon care that includes lunch, rest, bodily care, supervision of outdoor play, etc. for the children as indicated by the lead teacher.
• Assisting the Lead Teacher in maintaining an orderly and healthy classroom environment: Set-up and clean-up with other early childhood teachers to keep common areas clean and tidy; closets, bathrooms, vacuum hallways, outdoors and outbuildings and upkeep of plants. • Assisting with handwork/artistic projects
• Assisting children while using the bathroom, helping them change when they have accidents and diapering if needed.
• Communicating regularly with lead teachers
• Participating in required faculty meetings: Meet once a month for early childhood meeting
• Maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information
• Performing other duties as assigned by the lead teacher; including help with the set-up of seasonal festivals including the Lantern Walk and Winter Spiral and participation in the May Faire puppet show.
• Participating in a professional development process as indicated by the school
Requirements/Skills/Characteristics:
• Knowledge of child development and early childhood education from a Waldorf perspective
• Enthusiasm for working with children
• Experience working with children
• Appropriate role model for the children and parents
• Responsible for exhibiting good communication, problem solving and priority setting skills as well as maintaining an overall positive attitude.
• Ability to work in a collaborative team environment and enforce rules consistently
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when dealing with challenging situations
• Ability to work with staff and families from diverse backgrounds
• 21+ years of age
• Reliable transportation
Benefits - benefits begin at 20+ hours a week
● Paid personal/sick days; time allotment will be based on the number of days worked per week. Personal day for each day work (ie. 3 days = 3 personal days)
●10% remission per day work (ie. 3 days = 30% tuition remission)
● Mentoring - a mentor will be assigned
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must pass State of Maine Child Abuse Check and Maine Criminal Record Check and background clearance.

The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, and is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Close vision is required for detail work. Required work will take place outside (including hiking in the woods and walking around the property) and in a classroom and will frequently be noisy. Working with youth may require exposure to bacterial contamination.
