Art and Woodworking Teacher
Dec 17 2021 | Waldorf School of Baltimore | Baltimore, MD
Part-time Art Teacher
We are seeking a dynamic artist who can spark joy in the classroom for third through eighth grades. The sixty-percent, salaried art teacher position is threefold; to teach art to the students, to expose the students’ art to the outside community in Baltimore and expose the students to local artist’s work through shows in the gallery scape and throughout the school.
You will be passionate about teaching the Waldorf applied arts curriculum to children from 3rd grade to 8th grade. You give instruction in a warm and supportive way that provides a safe learning environment. You will help students conceptualize space, form, grasp complex ideas and reinforce academic subjects through arts integration. You will teach students how to use wood working tools, such as; saw, files, drills, gauges to create objects out of wood. With clay, you will guide students to sculpt animal forms, a bust, and other objects. The art teacher demonstrates and teaches students how to use watercolor paints in the wet on wet and dry technique to paint landscapes, animal, and botanical themes.
We are looking for a creative-thinker and planner who wants to make a difference to children’s lives, can differentiate instruction based on skill levels, and is passionate about Waldorf education.
The ideal candidate will hold a BA in a related field, have expertise in a wide variety of artistic mediums, knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about Waldorf education. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required for this position. A full job description (please link to the JD)
Salary is based on education and teaching experience. We offer a mentoring program and strong, supportive collegial relationships.
Our School
Founded in 1971, the Waldorf School of Baltimore is dually accredited by AWSNA and (AIMS) the Association of Maryland Independent Schools. We are a Pre-K through Eighth Grade school. Grades 1-8 have a full complement of subject classes, including Spanish, Handwork, Eurythmy, Music, Art, and Games and PE classes. Our beautiful, hillside campus in northern Baltimore City includes woodlands, fields, and garden activity areas. We are adjacent to Cylburn Arboretum. The school reflects the diverse nature of its community, drawing students from urban, suburban and rural areas. We are committed to working together to strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the school. We are housed in our own beautiful purpose-built building overlooking the city.
Baltimore is vibrant and culturally-rich, offering world-class music, art and restaurants; yet it still has a small town feel. New York, Washington and Philadelphia are a day trip away. Surrounded by the richness of the Chesapeake Bay, it is easily accessible to mountains and ocean beaches.
