First Grade Class Teacher Position - 2022/23
Dec 16 2021 | Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School | Ghent, NY
Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School is seeking a dynamic, experienced, Waldorf-trained teacher for our rising first-grade class for the academic year 2022-23. This class teacher position begins in September, although one should be available for faculty meetings the last week of August.
This is a full-time position that comes with health insurance, tuition remission and other benefits. The starting base salary is $43,000 a year with an incremental raise of $340.00 for each year of full-time service as a Waldorf School teacher. Class teachers are expected to commit to guiding their students on their journey through the grades. Due to a recent restructuring of our Middle School program, our Lower School teachers in good standing now have the option of either joining the Middle School team when their class enters Grade 6 or looping down to Grade 1 after Grade 5. Our hope, then, is that applicants for this position are open to a 5-year commitment at the very least.
Located in the historic Hudson River Valley of New York State, our school is ideally situated on a 900-acre biodynamic farm surrounded by beautiful views of the nearby Catskill and Berkshire Mountains. Both natural beauty and cultural riches surround us, providing wonderful opportunities for our students, families, and teachers. The school is 2.5 hours north of New York City.
The school is a branch of the Hawthorne Valley Association (HVA), which supports several Anthroposophical initiatives including the Hawthorne Valley Farm and Farmstore, a Farm Apprenticeship program, a Farmscape Ecology Program, the Alkion Waldorf teacher-training program, Adonis Press, and a Place-Based Learning Center. The local area abounds with additional initiatives including a Christian Community Church and the Berkshire-Taconic Branch of the Anthroposophical Society. Our diverse student body includes the children of co-workers from three nearby Camphill communities.
Qualified applicants should have completed at least an undergraduate degree as well as a recognized Waldorf class-teacher training program. Applicants ideally should also have previous experience working at a Waldorf School and an active interest in integrating the array of local resources that HVA and our local area bring into the class’s learning experience. Our teachers should have an unflagging devotion to children, a strong grounding in Waldorf Education, and a comittment to engaging in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work that is so necessary in our age. In addition, we are looking for candidates willing to engage in continuous professional development, dedicated to excellence in teaching, and committed to developing strong, collaborative working relationships with colleagues, parents, and the wider community.
